The Small Dog Double Standard: Why a Bite is a Bite, Regardless of Size

So I was just out walking a dog I've had in for a day train, Bruno – a formally reactive Rottweiler, 30+ kilos, now a truly neutral, lovely boy. While out we came across a lady walking her four little dogs, Chihuahua crosses, absolutely going mental on the end of their leads. Flat out, giving it full noise, barking, lunging.

They were pulling towards us and, as always, the lady just follows them, letting them drag her towards us and one of them nipped at Bruno.

Now, Bruno is a lovely boy. I get him back out of the way, because that's my job. But the lady, she just shrugs and laughingly states, "Oh, they're only little. They're just protective."

And that's the problem, isn't it? That's the double standard.

If Bruno, the big Rottweiler, had been doing that – lunging, barking, trying to get to her little dogs – there would have been a police report. There would have been outrage. Because he's a big, capable boy, and a bite from him does serious damage.

But why are we letting the little dogs get away with it? Genuinely being aggressive, biting, being absolute terrors on the lead. People let them get away with it because, "Oh, they're just little."

Stop being an absolute whopper.

A Bite is a Bite

A bite is a bite. Whether it comes from a 5-kilo Chihuahua or a 50-kilo Rottweiler, it's still aggression. It's still a dog that is out of control, stressed, and potentially dangerous. The only difference is the amount of damage it can do.

We laugh when a tiny dog snaps and lunges, calling it "feisty" or "protective." But we'd call animal control if a large breed did the exact same thing.

This Isn't Cute

This isn't cute. It's a failure of leadership. It's a failure to provide that dog with the structure and communication it needs to be a calm, neutral member of society.

Your small dog isn't "feisty" – they're terrified, over-aroused, and untrained. They're drowning in responsibility they were never meant to carry, because you've allowed them to believe they have to manage the world themselves.

Every Dog Deserves Better

Every dog, regardless of size, deserves clear boundaries, consistent communication, and a handler who takes responsibility for their behaviour.

Stop making excuses for their size. Start training for neutrality.

Because a bite is a bite. And every dog deserves to be understood and led, not excused.
